Day One

Morning:

Arrive in Chattanooga and begin your adventure with a scenic drive to Cloudland Canyon State Park, one of Georgia’s most spectacular natural destinations. Stop at the visitor center for maps and quick tips before heading out to take in breathtaking canyon vistas from several easy-access overlooks.

Walk the Overlook Trail along the rim, where morning sunlight reveals thousand-foot cliffs, wildflowers, and scenic photo spots. Set out on the Waterfalls Trail, a moderately strenuous two-mile round-trip featuring more than 600 stairs leading down to Cherokee and Hemlock Falls—both dramatic cascades framed by lush forests and mossy rock walls. The descent is a workout, but the viewing platforms make each waterfall incredibly rewarding, especially in spring and early summer when the water flow is at its strongest. Add time for a picnic or a pause at one of the shaded spots near the creek at the base.

If you want to lengthen your adventure, choose the West Rim Loop for additional overlooks and a taste of the area’s rugged terrain. With miles of scenic trails, beautiful waterfalls, and canyon scenery, Cloudland Canyon is the perfect first stop to set the tone for your weekend escape.

Afternoon:

Drive up Lookout Mountain and discover Rocktown, an iconic boulder field located within the Crockford-Pigeon Mountain Wildlife Management Area. Here, towering sandstone boulders—carved by ancient geological forces—dot the mountaintop, creating a climber’s playground with routes for all skill levels and panoramic views over Georgia’s highlands. Whether you’re an avid rock climber or a casual explorer, the maze-like array of rocks invites you to scramble, picnic, and enjoy the unique formations. This spot is also perfect for families, with gentle trails winding between giant boulders and shaded glens.

Extend your adventure by visiting Zahnd Wildlife Management Area, just minutes away from Rocktown. Zahnd is known for quieter trails and distinctive grey cliffs, as well as bouldering lines like “The Wave” and “Razors Edge.” Here, you can experience a more secluded climbing experience and scenic hikes along forested paths, often encountering wildlife along the way.

Both Rocktown and Zahnd require a Georgia hunting, fishing, or lands pass for access, and feature natural settings with minimal crowding—making them true off-the-beaten-path gems for adventure seekers.

Evening:

As evening settles in, make your way to one of Lookout Mountain’s renowned sunset spots, such as Sunset Rock or Point Park, where vast panoramas showcase the Tennessee River Gorge, rolling valleys, and the glow of Chattanooga in the distance. Sunset Rock, perched on the mountain’s western bluff, promises an unforgettable golden hour—arrive early to secure a spot for front-row views. Enjoy paved walkways and historic monuments at Point Park if you prefer an easy stroll and a setting steeped in Civil War history.

After soaking in the mountain’s magical atmosphere, check into your overnight accommodation—you’re spoiled for choice with stylish treehouses, charming bed & breakfasts, or luxe resorts, all offering restful comfort and memorable ambiance.

Dining Recommendations:

For dinner, unwind at Cesario’s Pizzeria in Rossville, where freshly made dough, hearty Italian classics, and a welcoming team make every meal feel like a celebration. Settle in for the night while mountain breezes and starlit views complete your first epic day.

Day Two

Morning:

Begin your day at Lula Lake Land Trust, a protected 8,000-acre wonderland on Lookout Mountain open only during special “Open Gate Days” on select weekends. Secure a reservation in advance and arrive ready for adventure—these public access dates help preserve the pristine landscapes and waterfalls that make Lula Lake famous. Hike scenic trails past sweeping bluffs, tranquil woods, and the star attraction: Lula Falls, a spectacular 120-foot waterfall accessed by a gentle 30-minute walk from the trailhead.

The “Classic Loop” route offers family-friendly hiking with bluff-top views and frequent wildlife sightings. Rangers and volunteers are on hand to help, making it easy for first-time visitors. Enjoy photo ops at the best overlooks, then pause by the rushing waters for family bonding or a peaceful picnic. Open Gate Days are limited and popular—plan ahead for a truly unique and memorable experience.

Afternoon:

Spend the morning exploring the Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park, a sprawling Civil War landmark set amid wooded hills and rolling fields. Begin at the Visitor Center, where friendly rangers, historic exhibits, and an immersive documentary lay out the story of the 1863 battle that shaped American history. Kids and adults alike find inspiration here—look for the famous Fuller Gun Collection and interactive displays. Then, strike out on foot or by bike along the park’s 50 miles of trails, which wind past monuments, memorials, and key battle sites.

Don’t miss the climb up Wilder Tower for sweeping mountain views and a new perspective on the battlefield below. Picnic areas and gentle walking routes make it easy to pause and reflect or let kids run free. With every turn, Chickamauga brings history vividly to life—blending natural beauty with living history for all ages.

Evening:

As evening arrives, visit Rock City atop Lookout Mountain, a one-of-a-kind attraction famed for its whimsical gardens, winding stone paths, and remarkable rock formations. Journey along the Enchanted Trail through lush gardens and under ancient boulders, passing through magical nooks like Fairyland Caverns and Mother Goose Village.

Traverse the swinging rope bridge and pause at iconic Lover’s Leap, where breathtaking panoramas let you “see seven states” on a clear day. Kids and adults alike are captivated by the artful displays, winding corridors, and vibrant native plantings. Unique photo spots and gentle evening breezes create the perfect close to your day. Don’t forget to stop at the gift shop or enjoy a treat from one of Rock City’s cafés before heading back for a restful night.

Whichever you choose, dinner here is more than a meal—it’s a highlight of your adventure.
