Walker County African American History Museum and Cultural Center
Walker County African American Historical and Alumni Association, Inc
Opportunity and History
The Walker County African American Historical and Alumni Association, Inc (WCAAHAA) was organized in 2000. Our mission is to teach ourselves and others, preserve and document the history of African Americans of Walker County, Georgia with the motto of promoting positive images in our community. Presently, WCAAHAA hosts a television show,Beverly’s Historical Moments, on UCTV/265, Fort Oglethorpe. Also, we highlight the African American heritage of counties of the Lookout Mountain Judicial District: Walker, Chattooga, Catoosa and Dade. We have published books, historical articles, placed Chickamauga Masonic Lodge Hall #221 on the National Register of Historical Places, and assist with the preservation of cemeteries and community support.
The assistant director position will be supervised by the director of the museum, the executive officers of WCAAHAA who serve as the board of trustees and their appointees. We are looking for someone who is energetic, computer savvy, detail oriented, self-motivated, dependable, and enjoys historical and multi-cultural interactions. We are looking for a person who is capable of not only engaging the normal middle age museum attendee but also capable of assisting with programs that capture the attention of children and young adults.
This museum and cultural center, located in La Fayette, Georgia, is in its initial phase of development. Therefore, this is a golden opportunity to be on the ground level of a new direction for Walker County and assist with mapping of a new and more multicultural face for Walker County’s historical footprint, a footprint highlighting Walker County beyond the antebellum years into the twenty-first century. Organized in 1833, Walker County has focused mainly on antebellum and Civil War history; however, Walker County wishes to venture beyond those borders into the county’s 150 years of historical importance beyond the American Civil War. Also, there will be an opportunity to work with a capital campaign for the development of an African American memorial park in La Fayette.
